Facial expressions are very important in American Sign Language because they indicate attitude, size and distance and they replace tone in sign language.



Also, different facial expressions indicate different types of questions.



For example:


Wh Questions

When signing who/what/when/where/why/how questions, to indicate you are signing such a question, you must scrunch your eyebrows.





and



Yes/No Questions

When signing yes/no questions, to indicate you are signing such, you must raise your eyebrows.
